Faces seem to constitute a unique class of stimuli for human beings. In social animals such as monkeys and humans, in which thre recognition of individuals plays a critical role in everyday interactions, the ability to identify faces is a hugely important skill. So relevant are faces to our daily lives that we often imagine that we see them in places where they do not exist, for example on the surface of the moon. The identification of faces takes place in a rapid, holistic way rather than in a feature-by-feature fashion. Thus, for example, we can detect family resemblances between individuals without being able to point to how we do it.
